Elevator booths sliding between floors, flights of stairs in a documentary studio, long-distance conversations...

To learn at least one story about the New Year, you had to get into the frenzied rhythm of everyday studio life and come out of it with a feeling of light dizziness.

And yet here they are - New Year's stories told on the go.

When twelve o'clock struck

1941 was coming to an end. I was then working as an assistant director for I. F. Setkina. On December 31, we passed the release of the frontline newsreel well, and the whole group was invited to celebrate the New Year. A table was set in a room on the ground floor at the Moscow Documentary Film Studio. In those years, holidays were especially expensive, and I was full of pleasant anticipation. Irina Frolovna called out to me:

— Lenya, where are the film boxes?

I realized that it was over. The handover was successful, and yet it seemed to her that there were still shots that the painting needed. I collected the boxes and took them to the editing room.

"You go meet everyone, and I still have to work," Irina Frolovna said.

Of course, I couldn't leave. We didn't hear the clock strike twelve. It was only when I took the newly assembled painting to the laboratory that we wished each other a Happy New Year. Irina Frolovna went home, but I had a long way to get there, so I stayed at the studio.

Putting three chairs together and putting film boxes under my head, I fell asleep in the small editing room, not regretting missing the New Year. After all, it was an unexpected and much-needed lesson in directing.

I've had no peace since then. Wherever I am, an unknown well-wisher is looking for me. And in the hour before the New Year, a voice that has already become familiar speaks into the phone.:
